The motion

That the Parliament joins in celebrating the 40th anniversary of Nelson Mandela being granted the Freedom of Glasgow; notes the video launched on the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation’s website, commemorating the city's historic awarding of the Freedom of the City to Nelson Mandela and understands that Glasgow was the first city in the world to do so; further notes that 4 August 1981 was the day on which Glasgow City Council presented the Freedom of the City to Nelson Mandela in absentia, since he was still on Robben Island, with Dr Alex Ekwueme, the then Vice President of Nigeria, accepting the award from the Lord Provost on Mandela's behalf; encourages individuals to contribute to the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation appeal to bridge the remaining financial gap to allow the launch of the Nelson Mandela statue competition, and recognises what it sees as Glasgow’s special place in the history of the anti-apartheid movement.
