25 Years of the Orkney Auction Mart
The motion
That the Parliament recognises the 25th anniversary of the Orkney Auction Mart; understands that the anniversary of the new mart building based in Hatson, Kirkwall, will be marked on 16 August 2021 by the first special sale of the season after recent relaxations of COVID-19 restrictions; recognises the centrality of the mart to the farming community in Orkney, which enjoys a reputation for high-quality produce and high animal welfare standards; notes that there has been an auction mart in Kirkwall since 1901, with the establishment of a farmers' cooperative in 1953, which latterly amalgamated with the West Mainland Auction Mart in 1993; highlights the fundamental importance of agriculture to the Orkney community, both culturally and economically; congratulates the mart's staff, both past and present, on their commitment to the successful running of the mart through the challenges of the last 25 years, and wishes the Orkney Auction Mart the very best of success for the next 25 years and beyond.
