The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern the impact that the overthrow of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on 15 August 2021 may have on Afghans intending to come to the UK to study; understands that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office suspended the Chevening Scholarship programme in Afghanistan, impeding the visa process for 35 Afghan students due to commence their studies this year; believes that there is a danger that prospective students remaining in Afghanistan may become targets for the Taliban forces; calls on the UK Government to ensure that those Afghan students who were awarded places to study in the UK be allowed to journey to the UK without delay; believes that the UK Government has a morally-bound duty of care towards all prospective Afghan students attempting to journey in the UK under the present circumstances, and reiterates Scotland’s solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and its hope for their safety and wellbeing.
