Borderlands Bid to Become UK City of Culture 2025
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes and supports the bid by the Borderlands region to become the UK City of Culture 2025; notes that this is the first time in a national competition that five different local authority areas of Dumfries and Galloway, Scottish Borders, Carlisle City, Cumbria and Northumberland have joined forces to shine a cultural light on this significant area of the country; notes that its theme is Just Transition to Net Zero, which aims to use culture to create new stories for the exciting journey ahead; believes that, by promoting a green growth theme, it will help create new high-value jobs within the low-carbon energy generation and carbon reduction sectors; wishes the joint Scotland-England bid every success in becoming the next UK City of Culture, which would provide a massive economic boost by attracting many more visitors to the area to enjoy a host of cultural attractions, including Rabbie Burns history, Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park, one of only four in the world, Drumlanrig Castle, Threave Garden and The Raiders Road Forest Drive, and notes that six locations will be shortlisted, with the successful applicants announced in September 2021 before the eventual winner is confirmed in May 2022.
