Orkney Borerays Awarded Slow Food 'Presidium

Lodged by Liam McArthur (Scottish Liberal Democrats) Standard Motion 22 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Orkney Boreray sheep on achieving Slow Food Presidium status, as a breed worthy of special recognition and protection; notes that these primitive small-framed, short-tailed heritage sheep are pure-bred descendants of the "lost flock" that was left by the last inhabitants of St Kilda in 1930 on the neighbouring uninhabited isle of Boreray; understands that, in 2017, the small flock transferred to Orkney and was registered as a separate wing of the breed by the UK’s Rare Breeds Survival Trust; recognises that Jane Cooper, from Rendall in Orkney, has been pivotal in the protection of the breed by establishing a breeding programme and founding the Orkney Boreray Community, currently with four established flocks all born and bred on Orkney; acknowledges that Orkney is home to Scotland's two only Slow Food Presidiums, with the North Ronaldsay sheep, the oldest breed in Northern Europe and well-known for its seaweed-based diet, earning the first such award in 2019, and wishes all involved with the Orkney Boreray well for the future.
