The International Day of Sign Languages, 23 September 2021

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that the International Day of Sign Languages on 23 September 2021 is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users; understands that the day aims to raise awareness of the importance of sign language and focuses on people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and people with speech disorders; understands that early access to sign language, and services in sign language, including quality education available in sign language, is vital to the growth and development of deaf people, and recognises the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity.
