Black Water of Dee Habitat Restoration Project Launched

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the launch of the Black Water of Dee Habitat Restoration project in the South West Scotland region; notes that it aims to protect and invigorate the river habitat for the benefit of fish in the area, including wild salmon and trout; recognises the importance of learning about the impact of climate change in order to conserve these globally endangered species; acknowledges that what it sees as this innovative work is being carried out on the largest tributary of the Kirkcudbrightshire Dee, which runs from deep in the Galloway Forest Park through Clatteringshaws Loch and down to Loch Ken, and derives its name from the dark appearance of the water; recognises the work already being carried out by Galloway Fisheries Trust under the expertise of the senior biologist, Jamie Ribbens, whose initial science studies have already attracted international interest; notes this latest project, which it believes is a first for Scotland, will involve nearly 500 tonnes of gravel being introduced to create a new spawning habitat in the river alongside the removal of conifers on the riverbanks to improve water quality and the replanting of more suitable native trees; acknowledges the support of the Galloway Glens Scheme, Drax, the owners of the Galloway Hydro Scheme, Forestry and Land Scotland and SEPA; wishes everyone involved in this innovative project every success, and looks forward to hearing of their future findings.
