International Right to Know Day
The motion
That the Parliament recognises International Right to Know Day on 28 September; notes that the Campaign for Freedom of Information in Scotland calls on all MSPs to endorse and deliver four actions to protect and strengthen the public’s right to access information; understands that the four key calls are to use current powers under Section 5 of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FoISA) to extend enforceable access to information rights to public services funded by public money, such as private care homes, to reform FoISA to ensure that the law delivers openness, transparency, accountability and empowerment, to acknowledge that the right to access information in the public interest is a human right, and to work with the UK Government to sign, ratify and implement the Council of Europe’s Tromso Convention on access to official documents held by public authorities, and agrees that these four actions should be supported.
