The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the teams behind the redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street Station on picking up the Best Building Award at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards 2020-21; recognises the roles of Transport Scotland, Network Rail, main contractors Balfour Beatty and design consultants, Arup, as the lead organisations behind the successful transformation of Scotland’s third busiest rail station into a modern, fully accessible transport hub; notes that the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards are jointly managed by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Scotland and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland; considers the awards to be the premier showcase for engineering excellence in the built environment, celebrating innovation and the vital contribution that civil engineers make to designing, upgrading and maintaining Scotland’s critical infrastructure; notes that the £120 million redevelopment of the station was completed in 2021 and also marks the end of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Project (EGIP), which has delivered 150 single track kilometres of new electric railway; understands that the new concourse almost doubles the floor space in the station and is housed in a glass-fronted building, which is visible from George Square to provide views of the fanlight, which forms the gable of the Category A listed Victorian train shed; thanks all of the teams involved in making the project such a success, and wishes all staff and customers of Glasgow Queen Street Station many happy journeys.
