The motion

That the Parliament recognises Libraries Week 2021, which takes place from 4 to 10 October 2021 and celebrates the role of libraries across Scotland, such as the Orkney Library and Archive; notes that Libraries Week is an annual showcase and celebration of the best that libraries have to offer and is organised by the Library and Information Association with the Scottish Library Information Council, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year; understands that public libraries attract 40 million visitors every year, with public libraries dating back to the 1850s in Scotland; pays tribute to the vital role of public libraries in local communities for all ages and purposes; commends the Orkney Library and Archive as one of Scotland's oldest and most successful public libraries; considers it to be an excellent example of the service that can be provided by a public library; recognises, in particular, its success in engaging with audiences through its acclaimed and very humorous social media content, which has helped promote the library and archive’s activities locally as well as with audiences across the world, built a friendly rivalry with colleagues at Shetland Library, and received recognition in the past at the Social Buzz Awards in 2011; applauds these innovative efforts that help raise awareness of what local libraries and archives have to offer and open up new ways of accessing these services; encourages everyone to support and promote their local libraries during and after Libraries Week 2021, and thanks all library and archive staff across Scotland for their dedicated service to local communities.
