Professor Dave MacMillan from Bellshill Awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize for Chemistry

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Dave MacMillan, who was born in Bellshill, on being awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize for Chemistry in recognition of him developing a tool that allows scientists to develop new molecules to make chemistry greener; applauds Dave’s dedication to chemistry, including his doctoral studies at the University of California, post-doctoral studies at Harvard, his independent career at Caltech and subsequently as the James S McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton; recognises the extraordinary high regard that Dave is held across the globe, including winning many prestigious science awards and being elected as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society; notes that Dave’s early education was provided at Stevenston Primary School and Bellshill Academy in North Lanarkshire, before he graduated with a degree in Chemistry at the University of Glasgow, and applauds Scotland’s public educational system for providing the foundations for Dave’s astonishing work, particularly his teachers and lecturers who inspired a young man from Bellshill to globally make his mark on pharmaceutical research and win the pinnacle of scientific accolades, a Nobel Prize.
