Pupils from Eastwood Schools Receive St Andrew's First Aid Mental Health Qualification

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates pupils from Mearns Castle and Eastwood high schools in Newton Mearns, and Williamwood High School, in Clarkston, on being some of the first young people to complete the new mental health first aid training course, Ready for Life, which has been developed by St Andrew's First Aid (SAFA); recognises that eight pupils from the three schools across S4, S5 and S6 were participants in the two-day course, which aims to teach young people about how they are able to identify signs of mental health issues among family and friends and be in a position to provide support; notes that the programme has been formulated for young people aged 14 and above and is held over 12 hours across two school days to make it compatible with class timetables; welcomes that it provides those who complete it with a recognised national qualification in mental health and schools across five local authority areas that already signed up to the initiative; understands that the existing courses are part of an initial pilot programme and that, if successful, SAFA's objective is for the initiative to be rolled out across Scotland, to help assist in establishing a new generation of mental health first-aiders; notes that SAFA is Scotland's only dedicated first aid charity, and applauds the Mearns Castle, Eastwood and Williamwood pupils on receiving this qualification.
