22% Increase in Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s P1 Enrolment into Gaelic-Medium Education
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that the number of pupils entering P1 in Gaelic-medium education (GME) reportedly rose by 22% in Na h-Eileanan an Iar in 2020; considers this to be a direct result of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s progressive policy to enrol new pupils in GME by default, which was enacted last year; notes that 135 pupils entered P1 GME in Na h-Eileanan an Iar in 2020, which represents the highest ever figure for the local authority as well as the year’s third largest council in Scotland; understands that Gaelic is now the medium of education for 43% of the primary pupils in the constituency, and praises the reported growth in numbers of pupils within GME primary education nationally, which, it understands, has doubled since 2002, as reported by Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s annual educational data publication.
