The motion

That the Parliament congratulates NHS Grampian’s cardiology department on undertaking its 200th transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedure; understands that this highly-technical operation is an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery and ensures that patients, who may have a high risk of complications with traditional open-heart surgery, can be considered for treatment with this less invasive TAVI option, which usually results in a quicker recovery time; further understands that the TAVI procedure generally uses fewer hospital resources, as general anaesthetic is not required and that, as opposed to traditional open-heart surgery, the vast majority of TAVI patients do not require intensive care afterwards, which can free up beds in intensive care units; notes that the procedure is quicker and allows patients to go home to their families sooner; understands that NHS Grampian started this service in 2019, and welcomes the improvement this will bring to the lives of many in the north east.
