Inverclyde Athletics Coach Receives Lifetime Honour

That the Parliament congratulates Inverclyde Athletic Club coach, Janice Hendrie, on being presented with an honorary life membership of Scottish Athletics at its recent annual awards dinner, held at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow; understands that Scottish Athletics awarded Janice with this prestigious award in recognition of all her time spent in athletics at both a local and national level; further understands that during Janice’s long career as a PE teacher and coach, she has personally helped more than 2,000 young people experience and enjoy the sport of athletics; appreciates that, since starting out as a PE teacher in 1997, Janice has aimed to improve the general health and wellbeing of young people in Inverclyde and has done this through the Scottish Schools Athletics Association (SSAA), having been a team coach for the SSAA for cross-country and track and field since 1990 to the present day; recognises that Janice convened the Track and Field Championship for over 10 years and was president of the SSAA in 2013-14; acknowledges that Janice has undergone various coaching training so she can continue to support athletics training in Inverclyde and kickstart new initiatives to drive up participation in the sport, particularly among women and girls; applauds Janice on her sporting achievements, which saw her receive the BBC Sports Scotland Unsung Hero of the Year Award in 2013, and the British Empire Medal in 2019; thanks Janice for all she has done and continues to do to encourage young people in Inverclyde to take part in athletics, and wishes her well for the future.
