The motion

That the Parliament congratulates The Ethical Dairy, at Rainton Farm, Castle Douglas, on winning the Innovation in Farming Award at the annual national Helping It Happen Awards, organised by Scottish Land and Estates; understands that the awards recognise companies, businesses and community groups for their work on tackling climate change, habitat restoration and providing training and jobs within rural Scotland; recognises what it sees as this latest success by the dairy company, which produces traditional cheeses and luxury ice-cream using organic milk from their herd; understands that the milk is produced using the cow and calf method, which involves keeping calves with their mothers to suckle, and is based upon treating the animals, land, environment and workers with respect and compassion; further understands that it is the first commercial dairy farm in the UK to adopt this model, whereby a balance has been struck between ethical considerations and the operation of a financially viable farm, and that this approach has seen a marked improvement in the cows’ health and contentment, while also promoting a more sustainable grass-based farming system, and wishes the farm continued success in the future.
