Recognising the Work of HEART UK
The motion
That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the hard work undertaken by HEART UK in raising awareness of the risks of high cholesterol and familial hypercholesterolemia; understands that familial hypercholesterolemia is an inherited genetic condition, where an altered gene causes high blood cholesterol, and that early screening can therefore help detect and prevent subsequent heart problems; acknowledges the work of Patsy Petrie from Linlithgow, the only Scottish Ambassador for HEART UK, who is working to increase the knowledge and visibility of familial hypercholesterolemia, which, it understands, affects one in 250 people; encourages those with early heart disease in their family, below the age of 60, to seek cholesterol testing, to know and understand their numbers and, if appropriate, seek genetic testing for familial hypercholesterolemia, and notes that HEART UK provides support and information services for patients and families affected.
