The motion

That the Parliament recognises the impact of the Eddleston Water Project, managed by the Tweed Forum, which uses natural flood management measures to slow flood waters on the Tweed and prevent flooding downstream, at Peebles, amongst other areas; notes that these measures include the creation of 38 new ponds to catch excess water, over 130 engineered log structures on streams, which allow fish to pass underneath while slowing excess water by directing it into land on either side of the river channel, the planting of over 330,000 native trees to absorb and slow water, and the re-meandering of 3km of the Eddleston Water, previously straightened over 200 years ago; understands that long-term monitoring of events is being undertaken by the Eddleston Water study, and recent reports have shown reduced peak water levels in the river downstream during heavy rain, as well as a delay of up to seven hours in the timing of river peaks, giving people more time to prepare and take action, and that homes in Peebles avoided flooding in the recent heavy rains despite the river reportedly experiencing its third highest flow rate since monitoring began; believes that natural flood management measures are an important element of flood risk management, which protect communities and increase habitat for species such as salmon and trout, and commends all involved for their work on this project.
