Edinburgh Achieves Living Wage City Status

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 15 to 19 November 2021 is Living Wage Week, which is an annual celebration of the real living wage; commends Edinburgh on being awarded Living Wage City status by Living Wage Scotland in recognition of the capital’s ambition to deliver on its Edinburgh Living Wage City action plan and double the number of living wage-accredited businesses across the city over the next few years; notes that around 450 businesses in Edinburgh are already committed to voluntarily paying their staff at least the living wage, a minimum of £9.90 per hour; recognises that the action plan, which aims is to see at least 500 new accredited businesses, was developed by the Edinburgh Living Wage Action Group, which is a collaboration of employers, public sector bodies, trade unions, social enterprises and business organisations, and is supported by key city institutions, including the City of Edinburgh Council and the Edinburgh Partnership; understands that this could mean that up to 40,000 workers in the capital will be protected by their employers committing to the living wage, with an estimated 10,000 receiving a direct pay increase as a result, and agrees that being an accredited living wage employer is not just about paying at least the the living wage, but also about entrenching a culture of fair work, giving staff financial security and demonstrating that their contribution is truly valued.
