Radio Clyde's #LightTheWay Campaign to Make Glasgow's Parks Safer

Lodged by Paul Sweeney (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 6 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament commends the launch of the Radio Clyde campaign,  #LightTheWay; understands that this calls on Glasgow City Council to reverse its current position on park lighting and install low-level safety lighting along key paths in the city's parks; acknowledges the pertinence of this cause, given recent incidents, such as pedestrians being diverted through a pitch-black Kelvingrove Park due to a reception in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum for world leaders during COP26; understands that the campaign already has the support of Arup, Rape Crisis Scotland, Victim Support Scotland, Visibility Scotland and YWCA Scotland; believes that engineering experts have confirmed that lighting of key paths traversing the parks can be delivered without a detrimental impact on wildlife and biodiversity; encourages therefore the local authority to reconsider its policy on park lighting, and calls on the Scottish Government to provide any additional funding required to make Glasgow’s parks brighter and safer.
