The motion

That the Parliament welcomes Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week, which runs from 1 to 7 December 2021; notes the importance of raising awareness of these incurable conditions for the reported one in 125 children and adults in Scotland living with them; notes the importance of early diagnosis and the need for high-quality specialist care and psychological support; understands that reduced access to essential healthcare services has impacted people with Crohn’s and colitis significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic; further understands that this has affected timely diagnoses and delayed investigations and surgery, leading one in five people to have flares of their condition, which in turn has affected the mental health of nearly a quarter of people with the conditions, resulting in unplanned, emergency surgery and urgent hospital admissions; considers that Crohn’s and colitis are serious conditions that need to be better prioritised as part of the NHS Recovery Plan; urges the Scottish Government to ensure that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) services in all NHS boards are adequately resourced, and values the role of Crohn’s and Colitis UK in providing essential information and support to individuals and families.
