Sauchiehall Avenue Wins National Urban Design Award 2021
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Urban Movement on winning the People Friendly Place category at the National Urban Design Awards 2021; understands that this award was made by the panel, having judged Urban Movement's design for Glasgow City Council's Sauchiehall Street Avenue project as an exemplar of how traffic-dominated roads can be transformed into places for people; notes that this project is part of a wider Avenues Project, being led by Glasgow City Council, which aims to encourage active travel, support businesses and create relaxing environments for all; understands that the judges placed importance on Sauchiehall Avenue being viewed as a truly democratic space in the city; further understands that Glasgow City Council invested £6 million in this project to widen footways, install a bi-directional cycle track, seats and cycle stands, street and decorative lighting, and improve the carriageway with disabled parking and loading bays provided; welcomes reports of the increased footfall on Sauchiehall Street since these works have been completed, and wishes the Avenues Project similar success in future locations around Glasgow.
