Remembering Rita Jamieson

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the life of Rita Jamieson, from Orkney, who recently passed away aged 99; recognises Rita as the founder of the legendary Blue Door shop in Kirkwall, which is offered rent free to a different Orkney-based group, organisation or charity each week and has raised over £1.7 million for good causes since it was established in 2003; notes that Rita's lifetime of local philanthropic work began in the 1930s with the provision of furniture and goods to people who needed them, free of charge; understands that, more recently, Rita was instrumental in the launch of the Orkney Charitable Trust in 2014, which seeks to provide financial help for people under 25 living in Orkney affected by ill health, disability, hardship or disadvantage; believes it is entirely fitting therefore that Rita received the British Empire Medal for services to the community in Orkney as part of The Queen’s New Year's Honours in 2017; recognises that Rita’s wonderful generosity has left a legacy that has touched every part of the Orkney community and will have a continuing positive effect on life in Orkney for many years to come; acknowledges that Rita will be sorely missed, and offers condolences to her family and friends at this sad time.
