Paget’s Awareness Day 2022
The motion
That the Parliament notes that 11 January 2022 will mark Paget’s Awareness Day; notes that 11 January was selected to mark the birth of Sir James Paget, who first discovered Paget’s disease; notes that the disease affects the normal repair and renewal process of bones, and can affect any bone in the human body; understands that the risk of developing Paget’s disease increases with age, that it is most commonly diagnosed in those over the age of 50, and that approximately 1% of people living in the UK are affected by the disease; further understands that while there are still some uncertainties about the cause of Paget’s disease, it is thought to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental influences; notes that Paget’s disease can be identified either through an x-ray, a blood test or a bone scan; understands that many individuals may be unaware that they have Paget’s disease, and considers that more needs to be done to raise public awareness of the disease.
