50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday
The motion
That the Parliament commemorates the lives of the 14 innocent men who were unlawfully shot down by soldiers from the British Army Parachute Regiment during a civil rights march in Derry on 30 January 1972; condemns the actions of those who fired on unarmed civil rights marches; welcomes the long-awaited Saville report, which contained contradictions to the Widgery report, widely described as an establishment "whitewash", by highlighting the innocence of all those injured and killed by British soldiers, whose actions were described as "unjustified" and "unjustifiable" in an apology by a former Prime Minister; regrets that the families of the victims had to wait so long to receive this recognition, if not, it considers, justice, and acknowledges the hope that, even now, on this, the 50th, anniversary of the dreadful event, it is not too late for justice to be served for those most affected by the actions of soldiers of the Parachute Regiment on that dreadful day.
