The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the 20th anniversary of the charity, Dogs Against Drugs, a Shetland-based organisation that serves the community through its mission to detect and deter illegal drugs in Shetland, working in partnership with Police Scotland; understands that the charity was founded in 2002, following a number of drugs-related deaths in Shetland, and was inspired by the drug detection dogs in use at airport arrivals in the Faroe Islands; further understands that the charity trains and deploys drug detection dogs to detect illegal drugs, delivers free drug education to local schools and signposts those affected by substance abuse to support services; believes that the charity’s work is highly valued by local police; notes that the charity is reliant on donations; applauds what it sees as the successes of the dog handlers and their dogs, who are trained in dual purpose drugs detection for finding illegal drugs on people, as well as area searching; understands that they have prevented hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of illegal drugs entering Shetland; congratulates the charity for its achievements, including, it understands, visiting every school on the islands and delivering drugs education to thousands of children; recognises what it sees as the importance of both the detection and prevention work undertaken by Dogs Against Drugs, and wishes everyone at the charity well as they celebrate this milestone.
