Hamilton Holy Cross High School Pupil Melanie Ellis Inspires with Mental Wellbeing Initiative
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Hamilton Holy Cross High School pupil Melanie Ellis on her mental wellbeing initiative, which, it understands, is inspiring young people to take active steps to strengthen their mental health during what it sees as these disruptive times; understands that Melanie, whilst working through her own mental health challenges during lockdown, including dealing with a period of COVID-19 self-isolation, took it upon herself to write a book of her experiences to help others; further understands that this developed into her establishing a wellbeing account on Instagram, which gained positive attention from both parents and young people; believes that Melanie’s role as mental health ambassador and sports leader at Holy Cross High School demonstrates her approachability, commitment and empathy to other students for their wellbeing, particularly those making what it sees as the often difficult transition from primary to higher education; commends Melanie on being approached by the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) and Scottish Sports Futures to work on projects engaging with young people across Scotland, offering her valuable experience, as, it understands, she looks forward to a career in primary education; notes what it sees as the important role of Holy Cross High School’s wellbeing services in supporting young people like Melanie, and notes, in particular, the school’s “wellbeing room” initiative, which was introduced to help pupils to feel supported during the school day.
