The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Sarah Sutherland, chief reporter at The Orcadian, on winning Journalist of the Year at the Highlands and Islands Media Awards, which was held on 4 February 2022; notes that the media awards and press ball were established in 1991 to promote and reward excellence in journalism in the Highlands and Islands; understands that Sarah, who started at The Orcadian on work experience in 2016, was credited by the judges for speaking up for her community and being an emerging talent; notes that Sarah was also shortlisted for Feature Writer of the Year Award and the Business Award along with sub-editor, Mark Harcus, who was also shortlisted for the Reporter of the Year Award, and that the paper's trainee reporter, Ethan Flett, was shortlisted for the Young Journalist of the Year Award; further notes that the newspaper has served the island community since 1854; understands that it has built up a loyal readership within Orkney and beyond over many years; believes that the importance of a healthy and vibrant local press has been reinforced during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people and communities have relied even more heavily on what it considers as trusted and informed sources of news and information, and pays tribute to all those who won and were nominated for awards after what it believes has been a particularly challenging period for all those in the sector.
