Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan

Lodged by Pauline McNeill (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 24 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern what it considers the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan; understands that 97% of Afghans face extreme poverty and that there are now 4 million Afghan refugees; further understands that this extreme poverty has led to devastating situations; notes reports that fathers have sold kidneys to provide money to feed their families, mothers have sold babies, and journalists have witnessed children dying in front of them from starvation and the cold; believes that $4.4 billion is needed to help the 23 million people in the country who, it understands, cannot feed themselves; considers that only a truly global response to combat the suffering in Afghanistan will be sufficient to match the scale of the crisis; calls on the UK Government to lead the efforts to bring an international coalition together to provide the aid and resources to prevent what it considers the unimaginable suffering in Afghanistan, and believes that the people of Afghanistan will never forgive the global community unless everything is done to help them in what it sees as their moment of acute need.
