The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement that Nicola Benedetti will be the next Director of the Edinburgh International Festival, succeeding Fergus Linehan, who has been Director since 2015; understands that Nicola will become the first women and first Scot to direct the festival since its foundation in 1947; recognises what it sees as the importance of Edinburgh International Festival in bringing some of the world's brightest and most talented performers to Scotland’s capital, which, it considers, has inspired people from across Scotland, including the Falkirk East constituency, to pursue a career in the arts; reflects upon the words of Nicola Benedetti in saying that music is the art of all the things we cannot see or touch, bringing millions together through the basic act of listening and the act of making melody, rhythm and harmony in the service of collective expression; considers that it is important that women are at the heart of leadership and progress in the music industry, ensuring that barriers are broken down in the promotion of culture across all communities; congratulates Nicola on her Directorship, and looks forward to seeing her influence bringing a new era to the Edinburgh International Festival.
