The motion

That the Parliament notes with sadness the passing of Sir Robin Duthie, from Greenock, who was elected honorary president of Greenock Cricket Club in 2018 and held a number of high profile business roles throughout his career; understands that Sir Robin, born in 1928, took on an accountancy apprenticeship in 1946 and, despite his studies being interrupted by National Service, he qualified as a chartered accountant in 1951; further understands that Sir Robin went on to spend the next three decades of his career at camping equipment makers, Blacks of Greenock, where he oversaw Blacks’ dramatic growth from a firm that employed around 200 staff into an international firm with over 4,000 employees; acknowledges that Sir Robin took on the role of chairman of the Clydeport Authority between 1978 to 1981 and was chairman of the Scottish Development Agency from 1979 to 1988, before being made chairman of Britoil from 1988 to 1990; appreciates that Sir Robin’s business achievements were recognised, first with a CBE in 1978 and then with a knighthood in 1987; believes that Sir Robin was an accomplished cricketer outside of business, having captained Greenock Cricket Club in 1960 and 1961, and, in 1961, he scored four successive half-centuries in the Western Union, which is a feat never bettered in the club’s history and which, it understands, was at a time when runs in the Union were particularly hard-earned; commends Sir Robin for his sporting and business accolades, and expresses its sincere condolences to his friends and family at this difficult time.
