St David's Day

Lodged by Rachael Hamilton (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party) Standard Motion 5 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament recognises St David’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint of Wales on 1 March; notes that St David was born in Caerfai, in Pembrokeshire, to Sant, a prince of Cardigan, and St Non, the daughter of a chieftain, in around 500 AD, and was recognised as a national patron saint at the height of Welsh resistance to the Normans; understands that the Welsh Conservatives will bring a debate to the Senedd on making St David’s Day a public holiday across Wales; considers that a St David's Day bank holiday could draw thousands of visitors to the country to mark the special day, providing the Welsh economy and tourism industry with a boost; notes that a 2018 Centre for Economics and Business Research study found that a bank holiday gave UK small shops an average extra boost of £253 in profit; believes that such a holiday could boost the Welsh economy by millions of pounds, and recognises what it sees as the deep bonds between Scotland and Wales, as proud nations with devolved parliaments, within the United Kingdom.
