Orkney Stands with Ukraine

Lodged by Liam McArthur (Scottish Liberal Democrats) Standard Motion 25 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the solidarity of the community in Orkney with the Ukrainian people; understands that a vigil was held outside St Magnus Cathedral, in Kirkwall, on 26 February 2022, which was attended by hundreds of Orcadians who, it believes, are rightly sickened by what it sees as Vladimir Putin's barbaric invasion of Ukraine; applauds what it sees as the fierce determination of the community in Orkney to prevent the arrival of the tanker NS Champion, which, it understands, is operated by Russian state-owned company Sovcomflot, to Flotta oil terminal; believes that the pressure mounted by people in Orkney was fundamental to the UK Government's eventual decision to ban Russian vessels from UK ports, announced on 28 February 2022; considers that this was a great achievement by the people of Orkney who, it believes, deserve enormous credit for the way in which they came together at this time to ensure that their views, and, it believes, the views of the country as a whole, have been heard loud and clear; understands that the community in Orkney, like, it believes, communities around the country and across the globe, continues to stand with the people of Ukraine; further understands that local fundraising efforts are underway in response to what it sees as a growing humanitarian crisis caused by the war; commends Michelle Green for organising the recent vigil in Kirkwall, and everyone who joined the local campaign to prevent the arrival of NS Champion to Scapa Flow; expresses solidarity with Ukrainians in Orkney, and across the country, at this difficult time, and stands ready to welcome more into Scotland's communities in the weeks and months to come.
