The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 22 March 2022 is World Water Day; further recognises that World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, focuses on the importance of freshwater; acknowledges that World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the, it understands, 2.2 billion people who are living without access to safe water; further acknowledges that, in taking action to tackle what it sees as the global water crisis, the core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030; welcomes that this year the focus is groundwater, which, it believes, can be described as an invisible resource that has an impact visible everywhere; notes that groundwater is water that is found underground in aquifers, which are geological formations of rocks, sands and gravels that often hold substantial quantities of water that feeds springs, rivers, lochs and wetlands, and seeps into oceans, while also recharging mainly from rain and snowfall infiltrating the ground; considers that life would not be possible without groundwater as most arid areas of the world depend entirely on groundwater to supply a large proportion of the water used for drinking, sanitation, food production and industrial processes; further considers that exploring, protecting and sustainably using groundwater will be central to surviving, and believes that groundwater will be integral to adapting to climate change and meeting the needs of a growing population.
