The motion

That the Parliament notes that 21 March 2022 was International Day of Forests; recognises that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Forests in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests; considers that forest sustainable management and their use of resources are key to combating climate change, and to contributing to the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations; further considers that forests play a crucial role in poverty alleviation and in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) yet that, despite what it sees as all these priceless ecological, economic, social and health benefits, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate; understands that wood helps to provide bacteria-free food and water in many kitchens, produce countless furniture and utensils, replace materials as harmful as plastic, create new fibres for clothing and, through technology, is part of the scientific fields of medicine and the space race; considers that it is vital to consume and produce wood in a more environmentally friendly way for the planet and the global population, and calls on all parliaments across the world to protect what it sees as this easily renewable resource through the sustainable management of forests.
