International Transgender Day of Visibility
The motion
That the Parliament recognises 31 March as International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), an annual event founded in 2009 and recognised in Scotland since 2014; understands that TDOV is dedicated to celebrating transgender people, raising awareness of the discrimination that they continue to face worldwide, and marking their contributions to society; considers that, as Women's History Month draws to a close, there is a need for greater awareness of trans women's contributions to gender equality and social justice; notes what it sees as the need for increased visibility for trans men, who it considers are often overlooked in the broader conversation regarding trans rights; applauds community organisations in the north east, especially Four Pillars in Aberdeen and Dundee Pride, for providing education and support to trans people within their local communities; commends the work of national organisations, including Stonewall Scotland and the Scottish Trans Alliance, for what it sees as their tireless efforts to educate and advocate on behalf of trans people for social justice and equity throughout Scotland and across the wider UK; expresses its solidarity with trans people, and hopes that TDOV will continue to have a positive impact for years to come.
