The motion

That the Parliament notes that April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month; understands that bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Scotland and that around 4,000 people in Scotland experience bowel cancer every year; acknowledges reports that bowel cancer is more common in people over 50 years of age, and especially in men; notes that bowel screening is offered to people aged 50 to 74 across Scotland; understands that half a million people in Scotland do a bowel screening test each year, and that people are 14 times more likely to survive bowel cancer if it is found early; acknowledges that the bowel screening programme was paused in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that it resumed in October 2020; is concerned that during the first nine months of the pandemic in 2020, there were 1,958 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and that this is 25% lower than would have been expected in this period had the pandemic not happened; encourages people who are eligible to take their annual bowel screening test; supports efforts to raise awareness of the main symptoms of bowel cancer, which are blood in the faeces, a change in bowel habit, and abdominal pain, and encourages people to contact their GP if they have any concerning symptoms.
