Benefits of White-tailed Eagles on the Isle of Mull
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the RSPB Scotland report, The Economic Impact of White-tailed Eagles on the Isle of Mull, which, it understands, reveals the significant benefits white-tailed eagles bring to the island; understands that between £4.9 million and £8 million of tourist spend is drawn annually by the 22 pairs of white-tailed eagles that reside on Mull, supporting up to 160 nature-based jobs and generating between £2.1 million and £3.5 million of local income; further understands that partnerships, such as Mull Eagle Watch, have been key to the success of the white-tailed eagle reintroduction on Mull; recognises what it sees as the contribution of white-tailed eagles in the country’s response to the climate and nature emergency; acknowledges what it sees as the importance of positively managing occasional challenges of living with white-tailed eagles to protect birds and livelihoods alike; notes what it believes are the immeasurable benefits to physical, mental wellbeing and public education brought by the joy of seeing the magnificent white-tailed eagles; commends Progressive Partnership, who were commissioned to carry out the study, for gathering and analysing the data used, as well as the professor and economist who peer reviewed the study, and wishes continuous success to everyone involved in the protection and re-introduction of white-tailed eagles on the Isle of Mull and across the country.
