The Girls of Cartridge Hut No. 7
The motion
That the Parliament notes that, to celebrate International Workers Day, The Girls of Cartridge Hut No. 7 will premiere at Ardeer Community Centre in Stevenston; further notes that the play tells the story of the industrial accident at Nobel’s explosive factory, Ardeer, in 1884, which tragically cost the lives of 10 young female workers, one of whom was only 14 years old, and how those girls were, it considers, made victims twice over by being blamed for the accident by a management keen to deflect blame from themselves; commends all those involved in the creation of this Creative Scotland-funded work, which it believes will play an important part in telling the story of the economic boom brought to North Ayrshire by large-scale factories and the devastating impact of their closure, and encourages all who can, to see the play, which will be performed twice a day until 7 May 2022.
