30 Years of Label Rouge for Scottish Salmon Farmers
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Scottish salmon farmers on achieving three decades of the prestigious Label Rouge quality mark held in France, which, it understands is a significant milestone, and a testament to the consistently high quality of Scottish salmon; understands that in 1992, Scottish salmon became the first fish and first non-French product to be awarded the Label Rouge quality mark, the official endorsement by the French authorities of the superior quality of a food or farmed product, particularly with regards to taste; further understands that to obtain Label Rouge status, salmon farmers must meet strict standards throughout the entire production process, including farming techniques, feed, processing, and distribution; understands that Label Rouge endorsement contributes to France being the top export destination for Scottish salmon, with a record 53,500 tonnes of whole, fresh salmon exported to France in 2021, accounting for 50% of the value of all UK salmon exports; notes that the farm-raised salmon industry directly employs more than 2,500 people across the country, including in urban constituencies such as Uddingston and Bellshill; understands that it supports more than 3,600 suppliers, with 10,000 jobs dependent on the sector, and further understands that Scottish salmon is one of the UK's largest food exports, generating hundreds of millions of pounds for the Scottish economy each year.
