Celebrating East Kilbride, 75 Years as Scotland's First New Town

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 6 May 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of East Kilbride being designated as Scotland’s first New Town; celebrates the town's growth and success over the years since 1947; recognises the work by the former East Kilbride Development Corporation, public and third sector bodies, businesses and residents of East Kilbride in contributing to the advancement of the new town; acknowledges the contribution of people from East Kilbride in sport, the arts and the sciences, from the renowned physicians, John and William Hunter to geologist, Professor Iain Stewart, footballers such as Ally McCoist, musicians from Aztec Camera and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and screen stars including Lorraine Kelly and John Hannah; celebrates the town’s unique architecture, including A-listed buildings such as the modernist Dollan Aqua Centre and the brutalist St Bride’s Church; honours the unique pieces of art, including sculptures by Jim Barclay and Shona Kinloch, and Stan Bonnar’s Elephants; understands that East Kilbride is often affectionately referred to as Polo Mint City as there are more than 600 roundabouts in the town; believes that East Kilbride offers a great place to live, work, study and do business; understands that the town, like other areas, has experienced challenges from the changing economy over the years but believes that East Kilbride has the opportunity to become a smart, sustainable town with excellent prospects for residents in new green jobs; recognises the community spirit, which has developed in the new town; gives its best wishes to everyone involved in the organising of the 75th celebrations, which will take place throughout the year, and believes that this anniversary should create a lasting legacy for future generations to grow up in and enjoy the benefits East Kilbride offers.
