Deaf Awareness Week 2022

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates Deaf Awareness Week, which runs from 2 to 8 May 2022 and is an annual event that aims to raise awareness and understanding of hearing loss and deafness; notes that, during the week, deaf charities and local groups across Scotland will celebrate exceptional deaf individuals, and showcase what can be done to champion inclusivity and make Scotland a more deaf-friendly country; understands that many deaf young people in Scotland, including those with moderate or mild hearing loss, have told the National Deaf Children's Society that they have faced particular challenges around communication and social isolation over the last two years, including due to the wearing of facemasks and use of remote learning during lockdown; further understands that recent research by the Society has found that deaf learners in Scotland are twice as likely to leave school with no qualifications, and only half as likely to go onto university, as hearing learners; believes that, with the right support in place, deaf young people can do anything and can achieve just as much as their hearing friends; welcomes the UK-wide petition launched by young members of the Young People's Advisory Board of the Society calling for every teacher to be given the skills and tools that they need to make sure that deaf students are included and able to achieve their full potential; believes that all schools would benefit from taking steps to improve deaf awareness and understanding of how best to support deaf children in class, and encourages all MSPs to support the deaf community and deaf children, young people and their families across Scotland.
