Revitalising Scotland's Town Centres

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the importance of the revival of Scottish town centres in the North East Scotland region, and throughout Scotland; notes the view that a town centre's first principle, which it understands aims to put the health of town centres at the heart of decision-making processes, needs to be applied consistently, not only to the retail sector but also to housing, public sector administration, healthcare, education, recreation and culture, celebrating the particularity of each town's unique history; recognises what it sees as the importance of healthy town centres for people’s physical, emotional and social wellbeing; considers that the commercial sector has its role in this shift but needs certainty, and that developers will only invest in town centres if it is clear that this is a long-term and reliable policy; highlights what it sees as the importance of recognising alternatives to big retail, and celebrating and supporting co-operatives, social enterprises and community wealth-building projects, and notes the view that a renewed focus on, and priority for, town centres is essential in the context of a deepening climate crisis, and for the health and wellbeing of people in their local communities.
