Mariya Javed’s Kiltwalk for AVM Research and Bereavement Support
The motion
That the Parliament recognises Mariya Javed’s inspiring efforts in the annual Kiltwalk to raise money to fund research into the condition of arteriovenous malformation (AVM); understands that Mariya’s charitable pursuit has already raised more than £16,500, having taken part in each Kiltwalk since 2016; further understands that the charitable organisation, Another Star in the Sky, in association with Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, will benefit from Mariya’s charitable proceeds as it aims to open a rare conditions unit and a bereavement centre at the Glasgow Children’s Hospital; notes that AVM is a tangle of abnormal blood vessels connecting arteries and veins, which can rupture and lead to a fatal haemorrhage; understands that Mariya’s brother, Ahmar, lost his life to an AVM in his brain and that this fuels her desire to ensure other families can be supported if a loved one’s life has been cut short by AVM, and celebrates that Mariya was given much deserved recognition when she was named Glasgow Times Scotswoman of the Year 2021 for her role in fundraising for AVM research but also for raising awareness of family bereavement and trauma.
