Cooke Aquaculture Scotland Cutting Carbon Emissions by Deploying its First Hybrid Feed Barge

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement by Cooke Aquaculture Scotland, headquartered in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, that it has deployed a hybrid feed barge, SM95, at its Mill Bay organic salmon seawater site in Stronsay, Orkney to cut carbon emissions; understands that the hybrid battery solution automates power supply and optimises use of generators, batteries, electrical drives and control systems, with modelling indicating that the technology will reduce generator run time by up to 90% and fuel consumption by up to 60%, which it believes is saving 146 tonnes of CO2 every year, the equivalent to removing 55 cars from the roads; further understands that this is the first fully-hybrid barge delivered in the United Kingdom by Inverness-based aquaculture supply company, Gael Force Group; understands that this is the first time that the system developers, Norwegian company, Fjord Maritime, has deployed its hybrid technology outside Norway, and welcomes what it sees as Cooke Aquaculture Scotland’s ongoing commitment to sustainability as the company explores options to deploy the technology on other barges across the fleet in Orkney and Shetland.
