Celebrating Poland's National Constitution Day on 3 May

The motion

That the Parliament extends its congratulations to the people of Poland, who celebrated their National Constitution Day on 3 May, the first declaration and adoption of their constitution having been on 3 May 1791; notes the long historic connections between Scotland and Poland and, in particular, the role of General Maczek who, in 1942, having had to quit the European battlefields of the Second World War where he had served with distinction, commanded the 1st Polish Armoured division, which served in defence of the Scottish coast between Montrose and the Firth of Forth, in his later years living in Leith; notes that the Great Polish Map of Scotland in Eddleston, in the Scottish Borders, which is believed to be the largest relief map in the world, commemorates what it sees as this great man, as does his statue at the City of Edinburgh Chambers, and extends its admiration to the people of Poland who, it believes, have extended unconditional sanctuary to Ukrainians fleeing the destruction of their proud country by Vladimir Putin and his army.
