World Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 12 May is World Fibromyalgia Awareness Day; understands that Fibromyalgia (FM) is a long-term chronic pain condition, although some people can also experience many other symptoms; further understands that there is no specific test, nor cure, that it is often misdiagnosed and the exact cause remains unknown; understands that anyone can develop symptoms, that it has been reported in all age groups, including children, but generally develops between the ages of 30 and 50, and affects seven times more women than men; further understands that one in 20 people may be affected by FM symptoms of some degree at some time during their life; expresses concern at reports that FM is often not recognised as the debilitating condition that it believes that it is, where it affects individuals' ability to work and carry out everyday tasks, as symptoms and the intensity of pain can vary from hour to hour and day to day; welcomes what it sees as the Scottish Government's commitment to making improvements for those living with chronic pain, through continued funding into research, and applauds all campaigners and support groups across the country, who continue to raise awareness of FM, providing support to those affected and their care support networks, offering advice, guidance, advocacy and providing educative information.
