Kirsty Gilmour Wins Silver at European Badminton Championships

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates two-time Olympian, Kirsty Gilmour, from Bothwell, South Lanarkshire, on winning the silver medal in the women’s singles event at the European Badminton Championships 2022, only losing out to the three-time world champion, Carolina Marin, from Spain, in front of a home crowd in Madrid; understands that this is Kirsty’s third silver medal at the European Championships and is yet another accolade in a glittering international career that has included a silver and bronze medal for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018 respectively, with other career highlights including winning two world tour events and two Grand Prix tournaments; further understands that 28-year-old Kirsty, who is currently 20th in the women’s singles world rankings, has been playing badminton since the age of four, with badminton being a sport etched in her family history, with her father a past Scotland junior coach, her mother a domestic player and her uncle also representing Scotland at international events, and wishes Kirsty continued success in her competitive career, as well as in her role as managing director of BASE, which it understands is a social enterprise that brings people and communities from across Lanarkshire together through a shared interest in badminton.
