RNLI Longhope Coxswain Retirement

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Kevin Kirkpatrick on his retirement as Coxswain of RNLI Longhope after 20 years ofservice; notes that Kevin became Coxswain in 2002, which it understandsfulfilled a long-held ambition and followed a firm lifeboat tradition on bothsides of the family stretching back to Kevin's great grandfather, Thomas Gunn,who was the Bowman on the first Longhope Lifeboat; notes that Kevin tragicallylost his father, grandfather and uncle on 17 March 1969 when eight men perishedafter the Longhope lifeboat, TBG, capsized during a heroic rescue attempt intreacherous weather; commends Kevin for following in their footsteps and on hisenduring commitment to RNLI Longhope, which has ensured that their legacy has beenmaintained through generations of new volunteer crew, including Kevin'schildren, Stella and Jack; understands that Kevin was accorded a vellum for hisleadership and seamanship in 2004 when the lifeboat saved three people and theyacht, Dasher, in wind speeds of up to 85 knots; further understands thatKevin, and the Longhope volunteer crew, were presented with a framed letter ofthanks from the then RNLI Chairman, Admiral Sir Jock Sclater, for the firstmajor service in the new Tamar Class lifeboat, Helen Comrie, when they saved aninjured man from tanker, FR8 Venture, in force 12 north westerly winds and a 15metre swell; believes that Kevin has been a highly respected Coxswain, whoseseafaring expertise has benefited his crew and tireless support of the stationhas benefited the wider community; understands that Kevin will continue to playa role at RNLI Longhope as part of the life-saving crew; thanks Kevin for hisservice, and wishes him and the Kirkpatrick family all the very best for thefuture.
