Condemning the Taliban’s Abuse of Afghan Women and Girls and Erosion of their Rights
The motion
That the Parliament condemns the Taliban regime in Afghanistan for the increasingly oppressive subjugation of its female citizens; notes the announcement of recent orders removing rights of Afghan women and girls; expresses concern at the series of edicts by the Taliban; is aware that they force all women to wear head-to-toe clothing in public, forbid travel without a male relative, force them to stay inside when no “important” work, as deemed by the Taliban, is required outside, and prevent female employment outwith limited areas of healthcare or education; highlights the Taliban’s previous promise that the rights of women and girls would be upheld, despite removing legal rights and continuing to deny access to secondary education; criticises the Taliban for reportedly abducting and imprisoning women who flee violent marriages, shelter from abuse in refuges or break their oppressive laws, with no fair investigation or trial and who, it understands, face beatings, torture and can be forced to marry Taliban followers to obtain freedom; empathises with all Afghan women and girls whose rights are impeded by what it considers as the Taliban’s barbaric orders; particularly regrets the many reports of deaths of women and girls compelled to turn to suicide to escape abusive treatment by males, backed by the Taliban; supports the many brave Afghan women standing up for their rights and assisting others who are fleeing from the Taliban regime, and urges the UK and other governments, into whose countries Afghan women have fled, to judge their asylum applications with sympathy and compassion.
